Albemarle Offering Free Fire Rescue Academy to the Public

Posted: Updated:

If you ever wanted to know what it's like to be a firefighter, you now have the chance to find out – free of charge.

Albemarle County Fire & Rescue together with Albemarle County Public Schools will be offering a rescue academy for the public. During the Albemarle Citizens Fire Rescue Academy, participants will use the Jaws of Life, climb the fire ladder, and help put out real fires.

"Hands-on training is going to consist of cutting up cars, pointing fire hoses, breaking open doors, providing medical care in the back of an ambulance while it's driving, and wearing turnout gear," said Gilbert Monroe, with Albemarle Fire & Rescue.

Instruction will take place Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from October 7 to November 25 at the Hollymead Fire Rescue Station 12 at 3575 Innovation Drive in Charlottesville.

The class is only open to 30 people.
