The debate over a military strike in Syria is top of mind as lawmakers return to Washington this week.

Here in the commonwealth, that same debate could make a big impact on the race for governor with Election Day looming in just eight weeks.

Former Staunton Republican Delegate Chris Saxman won his first race in 2001, just after September 11. He says the Syrian debate could have a similar effect at the polls this year, and could be a liability depending on how the candidates respond.

"I think Syria is going to have a much larger impact than people are even estimating now, because we're not talking about it in the context of the gubernatorial campaign," Saxman said.

Republican Ken Cuccinelli voiced his opposition to intervention in the war-torn country last week. Democrat Terry McAuliffe has yet to take an official position.
