"Gran Fondo" Race Tests Cyclists' Endurance

Posted: Updated:

A first of its kind race in central Virginia is testing the pedal power of endurance cyclists.

They took off from Walnut Creek Park Sunday morning for a race called Gran Fondo, which means "big endurance" in Italian.

The racers ranged from people interested in learning about the area's landscape to competitive cyclists.

"There are three different route lengths we're offering. There is 102, 55 and 22 mile length, and it's really meant to showcase the beauty of Albemarle County," said race organizer Matt Butterman.

Most of the cyclists finished up their races by early afternoon.

Organizers hope this is the beginning of future Gran Fondo races in central Virginia.
