Albemarle School Gets School Resource Officer for Next Year
Student safety is now taking center stage at Walton Middle School in Albemarle County. A police officer will be stationed there for the next school year.
Officer Ron Davis is walking the halls for the first time at Walton. He is called a school resource officer, but dressed in full police uniform and carrying a gun. Davis knows the layout of the school as well as lockdown procedures, but his duties are much broader.
Albemarle County sends the resource officers to national training that's tailored to the needs of students.
"They're going to the classes, they educate the students on the things that we deal with, the things that are expected from them when they get out here in the public," said Albemarle County Police Lt. Tim Aylor.
The resource officer is charged with getting to know students and mentoring them. The officer also speaks to students about the dangers of driving while texting or drinking.
Parents say they hope a police presence will also deter bullying, drugs, and other dangerous behaviors.
