Martha Jefferson Monday: When is it Time for a Hip Replacement?

Posted: Updated:

If you're having a hard time walking, or feeling pain in your groin area, it could be a sign that you are in need of hip replacement surgery. Often times, not being able to kick the constant feeling of pain is the first sign.

"When the pain gets to the point where it's happening every day, and it becomes discouraging, it's likely time to do something about it," said Dr. John Edwards, an orthopedic surgeon at Martha Jefferson Orthopedics. "When people can't really do their daily activities, it's probably time for a hip replacement."

Dr. Edwards says the first step is to see your doctor. They will likely take some x-rays to find out exactly where the problem lies.

"Most types of hip problems that require a hip replacement are age-related," said Dr. Edwards. "Sometimes, they can also be associated with an injury."

If a replacement is needed, surgery is always scheduled at a convenient time for the patient. At Martha Jefferson, a time-tested approach to the hip replacement is used, and now, new materials are improving the process.

"In the last few years we've come up new materials that we think are going to last longer," said Dr. Edwards. "In particular, there is a new kind of plastic that is part of the hip replacement and it appears to be lasting much longer than what was previously used."

Hip replacement surgery takes about an hour. Patients then recover in private hospital rooms for a few days before heading home. Although most recovery takes place in three weeks, it could be up to six months before you truly feel you are back to your old routine.
