Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State and local government agencies in Virginia are getting $17 million in homeland security grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Rep. Gerry Connolly says the grants include $3 million for the Virginia Port Authority and Hampton Roads police departments for port security.

The various grants are aimed helping planning for acts of terrorism and other catastrophic events, and enhancing security programs in high-threat, high-density urban areas.

The funding also will help plan emergency preparedness and provide disaster relief and emergency assistance in the wake of disasters of all types.
