A phone call from the governor let the Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce know they dominated the second annual Governor's Food Bowl challenge.
Virginia chambers and state agencies spent five weeks over the summer collecting food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Close to 115,000 pounds of food was collected by the Augusta chamber, beating out the nearest competitor by almost 100,000 pounds.
Linda Hershey, the chamber's president and CEO, said in a statement, "The secret to our success in the challenge was that our members and their companies have giving hearts! McKee Foods financial contribution helped to spur on the manufacturing sector. Couple that with the involvement of 168 members and you have a winning combination that truly cares about the well being of the families in our community. Special thanks to the staff and Chamber Board members for their inspiration and dedication to this special cause."
The chamber will get another food bowl to fill in an October ceremony.
