The Fort Defiance football team will host Buffalo Gap in its season opener Friday at 7:30 PM.

The Indians made the state playoffs last season, and return a young team this year.

Head coach Dan Rolfe says his team will get better as the season progresses, and right now there's lots of optimism and excitement.

"The kids are very excited," says Rolfe, "and they're as excited to be playing at home as I've ever seen them, and that's a great thing."

Senior right tackle Dalton Orebaugh says, "I get butterflies even thinking about it.  It's a lot different.  Last year, you knew you were going to have another year to play, and another year to get prepared.  It's such a big deal, because it's the last time we'll have a first game.  It's a big deal for all of us, especially us seniors."

Senior wide receiver/corner back Caleb Simmons adds, "It's a great feeling to get on our new field.  It's just something special for us seniors, I know.  Definitely."

The Indians beat the Bison 41-14 last season, but Rolfe says the teams are different this year.

"They're good," says the Fort head coach.  "Went and watched them on film.  They're big, very athletic, and I think they're going to surprise a lot of people this year."

Senior RB/LB Evan Stickley adds, "They have a heck of a team this year.  They're a lot different from last year.  We got to come ready."
