Thursday, we're learning more about Michael Lee Saylor, the man charged with a child sex crime in Albemarle County. Saylor, 58, is accused of aggravated sexual battery of a child under 13, stemming from an incident earlier this year.
The arrest warrant, filed in Albemarle Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, indicates that this is indeed a new charge in a separate case for Saylor - but, he's been down this road before.
After months of investigating, Albemarle police arrested Saylor last week on one charge of aggravated sexual battery of a child under 13. According to his arrest warrant, the crime took place earlier this year on/or about January 16.
But this isn't Saylor's first arrest. Saylor has been prosecuted once before for the very same crime. According to court documents, Saylor faced a jury in February 2012 for the same charge - aggravated sexual battery of a child under 13.
But after three days of testimony and deliberation inside Albemarle County Circuit Court, a jury couldn't agree on whether Saylor was responsible, and the judge declared a mistrial. Last July, Albemarle prosecutors decided not to move forward with another trial.
But now, one year later, Saylor is back behind bars.
He's being held at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail, and will make his next appearance in court September 23. Albemarle police and county prosecutors remain tight-lipped on the specific details, not uncommon in a case involving a juvenile.
The attorney who defended Saylor in his case last year declined to comment on Saylor's pending charges.
