Charlottesville Org. Provides Free Tools for Alzheimer's Care

Posted: Updated:

Many people in central Virginia are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. In fact, the people at Home Instead Senior Care say more than 70 percent of people with Alzheimer's live at home. That's why they're providing several free tools to help people struggling to provide care.

As part of World Alzheimer's Month in September, Home Instead Senior Care of Charlottesville is unveiling an app, a downloadable online "tool kit," and a series of workshops on Alzheimer's.

The "Alzheimer's and Other Dementias Daily Helper" app will be available September 16 and will offer on-the-go solutions for families when dealing with a variety of difficult situations.

The downloadable "Confidence to Care," kit provides similar resources, much of it the same information Home Instead Senior Care provides its own employees.

The workshops will provide those resources as well, and are meant to get people together to share ideas on how to care for themselves as well as for their loved ones with Alzheimer's.

"The thing about someone with Alzheimer's or dementia is every day is different, so when you're taking care of a loved one you never know what challenge you're going to run into that day and you just need the tools to be able to get through that day to help yourself and the person you're caring for," said Jeanne McCusker, the owner of Home Instead Senior Care Charlottesville.

McCusker also urges people to join the Charlottesville Memory Walk for the Alzheimer's Association Saturday October 12 at Lee Park.
