A collection site for trash and recycling in Ivy will stay open while Albemarle County works on plans to replace it.
Tuesday afternoon, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority's board approved the county's request to extend its contract to run the Ivy transfer station. The contract was set to expire at the end of December.
Albemarle County asked the authority to extend its operation of the facility through June 2014, which gives the county more time to develop plans for three convenience centers run by a private company.
