A child is dead and his mother seriously injured after their car slammed head-on into a tree in Augusta County.

The crash happened around 8:15 Saturday night on Route 720 near Dry Branch Road in Churchville.

State police say 32-year-old Stephanie Dudley from Staunton was driving her Ford Mustang when it ran off the side of the road, through a fence, and then hit a tree.

She was flown to UVA Medical Center with what are described as life-threatening injuries.

Dudley's three-year-old son, Karl Swanson Jr., died at the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
