Sen. Obenshain Unveils Plan to Fight Human Trafficking
Senator Mark Obenshain
The Republican looking to become the next state attorney general has laid out his plans to fight human trafficking in Virginia. Senator Mark Obenshain unveiled the second part of his "Safe Communities Agenda" Tuesday morning. His plan has five major points.
First, make human trafficking a stand-alone felony offense. Right now, it is prosecuted under abduction or sex crime charges.
Next, add anyone engaging in commercial sex with a minor to the sex offender registry list.
Third, extend asset forfeiture laws to human trafficking, so the proceeds can be set aside to cover investigative costs and compensate victims.
Then, ensure victim compensation and create a civil cause of action for victims.
Lastly, establish a human trafficking task force to assist prosecutors, collect data, produce educational materials and review policy.
