‘Backpack Buddies’ Gets Students Ready for School

Posted: Updated:

A group called Backpack Buddies has helped more than 100 children get ready to go back to school.

Thursday, volunteers stuffed backpacks with school supplies that were donated over the summer. It was all leading up to the big moment: giving the backpacks to their new owners at the Boys & Girls Club in Charlottesville.

Lucia Hoerr founded Backpack Buddies when she was just 10 years old.

"I'll take them in and I'll be bringing all the backpacks in and they'll be like ah the backpack girl's here - it's the backpack girl and they'll all be crowding around and smiling and pointing at them and saying which one they want and that just makes me feel so happy," Hoerr said.

By stuffing more than 100 backpacks, the group exceeded its goal for the year.
