VA Grant to Preserve 1,265 Acres of Battlefields

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - A new state grant is helping protect 1,265 acres on 13 Civil War battlefields throughout Virginia.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the funding of more than $2.5 million from the Department of Historic Resources on Thursday.

The grants are being awarded to the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, the Civil War Trust, Richmond Battlefields Association and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

The tracts being preserved are associated with battles in Appomattox, Culpeper, Fauquier, Hanover, Henrico, Loudoun, Prince Edward, Prince William, Shenandoah and Spotsylvania counties.

The organizations will match state funds to either purchase land or obtain easements on specific tracts.

Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech says battlefield conservation supports broad-based conservation efforts because many of the battles took place along rivers, streams, and wetlands or on farmlands and in forests.
