The National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children is currently working alongside law enforcement
in central Virginia to find Alexis Murphy. The Center's missing
children division director says the circumstances of Murphy's disappearance are
different than most.
Murphy's falls within a
small group of about 100 children that's a top priority and requires immediate
attention and public help. The Center has Alexis on
its website. It provides the FBI with
resources -- everything from information about attempted abductions to other
missing children cases. The Center also helps with
search and rescue parties.
Senior division director Robert
Lowery said searching for Alexis is extremely difficult.
"The case like we're
seeing with Alexis, where you have no investigative reason why the child
would've left or gone away, we have to consider the worst possibly and pray for
the best. In this case this is why you're seeing a very massive search," he
Lowery said the public has
been instrumental in solving rare cases like Alexis'. He said it takes just one
person who says one thing to provide a missing but critical piece of
information that cracks the case and finds a child.
