A Shenandoah Valley man is celebrating after receiving a big honor this weekend.

The Virginia Auctioneers Association hosted the 36th annual State Champion Auctioneer Contest, which included several rounds, in Powhatan on Saturday.

The top prize went to Ben Svonavec of Mount Sidney. At 24, he was the youngest person to compete, and he says he was taken aback by the victory.

There were 13 other contestants from around the commonwealth. More than 150 people bid on coins, jewelry and other household items and judges evaluated the auctioneers based on their presence, voice and overall salesmanship.

Some of the proceeds from the event will go to Relay for Life.

Svonavec said he's also excited about the opportunity to become more involved with the association since the win.
