UVA Board of Visitors Holds First Meeting with New Leaders
the University of Virginia Board of Visitors begins the 2013-2014 school year
The University of Virginia's Board of Visitors convened Thursday afternoon for a new year.
The meeting represented new beginnings in a lot of ways: there are three new board members and a new rector.
It was the first public board meeting under the leadership of Rector George Keith Martin, who took over in July. The new members joining this year's board are John Griffin of New York, Frank Genovese of Midlothian and Kevin Fay from McLean.
The meeting, which was the orientation to a two-day retreat, began with a discussion of the board's educational policy and diversity. The board heard from Executive Vice President John Simon that focusing on a few stem areas to develop would allow the university to remain competitive with other institutions.
Throughout the retreat the board is expected to focus on the university's strategic plans, the hot-button issue that caused turmoil resulting in the temporary removal of President Teresa Sullivan.
Thursday evening, the board will discuss finance, student affairs and communications.
