Press Release

Charlottesville, Va. – Piedmont Virginia Community College student Mary Hedges of Charlottesville has been selected as a Valley Proteins Fellow for 2013-2014. She is one of only 10 Virginia community college students selected for this prestigious scholarship program, administered by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE).

Hedges is enrolled in the associate of science degree in business administration at PVCC.  An honor student, she plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in either management or finance. She is Vice President of the Student Government Association, Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa – the leading international honor society for two-year colleges – and a PVCC Peer Mentor. She is a member of her church choir and plays piano for nursing home residents and at local benefits.

The Valley Proteins Fellows scholarship program, which began in 2011, was designed for high-achieving second-year students at Virginia's Community Colleges. In addition to receiving full tuition, book expenses and fees, the Fellows participate in a unique curriculum of intellectual and cultural activities. The Valley Proteins Fellows represent the best and most motivated scholars who demonstrate both academic and leadership potential along with a burning desire to excel.

The program is made possible through the generous donation of Valley Proteins, Inc., based in Winchester. "These young people are tomorrow's leaders," said Michael A. Smith, vice president of Valley Proteins, Inc. "We are confident that the returns for our investment in them will be substantial."

"This isn't an easy scholarship to earn," said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia's Community Colleges. "Those who are selected are talented, motivated and dedicated to succeed. They're the kind of students who give you confidence in the future of our commonwealth and country."
