An employee at a Charlottesville mainstay has undoubtedly made her mark. Millie Carter is one of the first faces you see when you walk into Timberlake's drugstore - and she's kept customers coming back for more than 50 years.
Carter is celebrating 55 years behind the counter at Timberlake's on the downtown mall - and, luckily for her customers, she has no plans to retire.
"When I get up in the morning, I enjoy getting dressed and going to work," said Carter.
Millie Carter has been giving her customers at Timberlake's a dose of joy for 55 years.
"We need another 50," said Frances Fife, a regular customer.
Carter's customers adore her, but she's grateful they've put up with her all this time.
"Don't you think they all deserve an award?" said Carter.
When her boss bought the store, he knew it was a package deal.
"He said that I came with the store. And then he signed on the dotted line," said Carter. "And that made me feel 10 feet tall."
Carter remembers when six drugstores crowded the downtown mall - but Timberlake's survived.
"We hung in there, we whipped 'em all," said Carter.
Timberlake's regulars say the best cokes in town and the milkshakes draw them in early on and the people who serve them keep them coming back.
"The thing I take great pleasure in is sitting at these tables with my grandchildren when I and my children had been here and some of these wonderful ladies have been helping us all those years," said Bunny Hunter, a Timberlake's customer.
Carter says she's reached this 55-year milestone thanks to her loyal customers and co-workers.
"You know when you go home at night and you think 'somebody cares about me' - that's good," said Carter.
And with the love she still has for her work, she plans to stay here for years to come.
"It's been fun. You don't stay at one place that long unless you like what you're doing," said Carter.
Timberlake's has been a downtown Charlottesville landmark since 1890 - and in the past 55 years Carter has shown, like the place where she works, she has staying power.
