Martha Jefferson Monday: What do you do if diagnosed with diabetes?

Posted: Updated:

Millions of people across the United States - nearly 10% of the population - have been diagnosed with diabetes. Finding out you have the disease though, isn't always easy.

Rita Smith is a registered dietitian and says the first step is to sit down and talk with your doctor.

"With a new diagnosis of diabetes, you want to sit down with your doctor, or your healthcare provider, and really have a discussion of what is expected for treatment, what is expected for goal ranges of your glucose and how are you going to get there," noted Smith.

The good news - and what Smith says to always remember - is that diabetes is controllable.

"It is not a disease that controls you. You control the disease."

After meeting with your doctor, receiving specific diabetes education is important.

Martha Jefferson offers everything from individual sessions to group classes and even supermarket sessions where you can learn important tips and tricks to keep your diabetes in check.

Reading labels, planning menus, understanding how to check your blood sugar and lab values, and even knowing when to get your feet checked are all wrapped into the education.

After learning what you can do, the key then is to make the best choices for your own situation, and lifestyle changes that will allow you to stay on top of your diabetes.

"Diabetes is very controllable, sometimes even without medication," said Smith. "It just depends how early it's caught and then how engaged a person is in making lifestyle changes."
