RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Emails between top aides to Gov. Bob McDonnell and officials at Star Scientific Inc. show the governor urged company CEO Jonnie Williams to pitch his anti-inflammatory supplement to Virginia Health and Human Services Secretary Bill Hazel.
Hazel said Thursday he met with Williams for about an hour on Nov. 4, 2010, in Richmond. Williams pitched his company's Anatabloc supplement as a way to cut Virginians' health care costs and benefit the state tobacco industry.
In emails with McDonnell's former scheduler and Hazel's top aide, Williams' executive assistant said that the governor told Williams he needed to speak to Hazel regarding the product.
Authorities are investigating whether McDonnell used his office to promote Star Scientific's product in exchange for thousands of dollars in undisclosed gifts from Williams to McDonnell's family.
