New Poll Shows Virginians Feelings Toward Same-Sex Marriage

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A new Virginia poll finds that registered voters it surveyed support same-sex marriage 50 percent to 43 percent with a clear majority of women approving it while more men oppose it.

The same Quinnipiac University poll also found the governor's race between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli still tight with McAuliffe holding a slight lead, thanks largely to the support of women.

The contentious issue of gay marriage in Virginia becomes more relevant after last month's U.S. Supreme Court ruling in two cases essentially left the issue to be decided in America's 50 state capitals.

Quinnipiac found that women back allowing same-sex couples to marry 55 percent to 39 percent. Quinnipiac interviewed 1,030 registered Virginia voters from July 11-15. Its margin of sampling error is plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.
