Taylor Barnette Transferring From Cavaliers Basketball Program
Taylor Barnette will transfer from Virginia
Rising sophomore guard Taylor Barnette is leaving the University of Virginia basketball program after one season with the team. Head coach Tony Bennett made the announcement Wednesday, saying Barnette wanted to take on a bigger role at another school.
The 6-foot-3 guard played in 26-games with the Cavaliers last season, starting two. He averaged 2.6 points per game, and connected on almost 44-percent of his shots from three-point range. Barnette had a career-high 13 points in the 'Hoos victory against St. Johns in the second round of the NIT Tournament.
He was a rated as a three-star prospect coming out of high school. UVA center Mike Tobey was part of the same recruiting class as Barnette.
"I was surprised," says Tobey. "I didn't see it coming. He obviously had to think about it. It was a tough decision for him. I know it wasn't easy. He said he'd been thinking about it for a long time. If he's happy with his decision, I am."
Barnette is the ninth player to transfer from UVA since 2009.
Tobey says, "We just have to worry about ourselves, now, and just keep moving forward, and I think we will. It's a loss. It's a loss, definitely. But we just have to focus on what we're going to do, and how we're going to improve. I think we'll be alright."
