The University of Virginia athletic department announced Wednesday Augie Busch has been named the new head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
The announcement comes two days after a group of Cavalier swimming alumni asked University president Teresa Sullivan to hold off on naming a new coach until after a full investigation into former coach Mark Bernardino's retirement.
Augie Busch is the son of US National Team Director Frank Busch, and spent the last two seasons as the head coach of the women's team at the University of Houston. He was also an assistant coach for eight years at Arizona.
Busch takes over a program at UVA which has won ACC titles in each of the past six seasons. The events of the past few days also demonstrates the passion surrounding the Virginia program.
"I take that as nothing but a positive," says Busch. "When you talk about the alumni, and the passion that they have, to me it just shows how much they care about the program, and how much they care about the direction of the program. When people surrounding the program speak up and show concern, I take that as nothing but a positive."
The 37-year-old Busch says the process moved quickly after he was approached by the university about the position.
"To be sought after for just a prestigious job is beyond an honor says Busch. "I feel so positive about this, and moving forward. I'm so positive about the future, and what we can do there."
