Albemarle County supervisors have picked an interim member to fill a seat left vacant by Chris Dumler.

They decided unanimously Wednesday night to appoint William Petie Craddock to take over Dumler's seat. Craddock, an Independent, was one of 10 candidates vying for the position.

Although he won't be staying for long, he says he is ready to help Scottsville bounce back.

"I'm just overwhelmed that the supervisors thought enough of my abilities that and myself to come up with a unanimous vote, which I'm sure was hard, there were a lot of good candidates out there," Craddock said.

The Scottsville seat was left wide open after embattled Supervisor Chris Dumler pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual battery, which brought on months of protests at meetings and eventually a trial until he finally stepped down in early June.

Now the district has a chance at a fresh start.

"Whatever happened, they deserve better than that and Petie can put that Band-Aid over and help it heal up until that new person is elected," said Supervisor Rodney Thomas.

Craddock, a pharmaceutical sales rep, will fill the seat only until a special election is held for supervisor.

"We're very pleased and I think it's a good choice for the citizens of the district and I know they will engage with them right away," said Supervisor Ann Mallek.

Craddock comes with years of experience on the planning commission and with the chamber of commerce. Now he is looking forward to helping Scottsville turn over a new leaf.

"You get only so many opportunities in your lifetime to step up to the plate and I've felt that this was one of those times," Craddock said.

The special election will be held in November.
