Governor Bob McDonnell's son has been arrested in Charlottesville for being too drunk.

Police say 21-year-old Sean McDonnell was arrested Saturday morning for public swearing and intoxication.

Authorities say the incident happened on Wertland Street near Fourteenth Street, and that the officer took McDonnell to jail due to his level of intoxication.

No other details are being released, including his blood alcohol content.

"Whenever we take someone into custody for public intoxication they are generally transported to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail and they're detained there," said Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts, spokesman for the Charlottesville Police Department.

The charge is a misdemeanor. Sean McDonnell is a rising fourth-year student at the University of Virginia.

The governor's press secretary released a brief statement saying, "This is a personal matter and is being addressed by the family."

Sean McDonnell will be in court on August 12.
