A Waynesboro man wants to tear down his house, but the city is forcing him to put it on the market.
The house on Chestnut Street is part of Waynesboro's Historic District, so owner Robin Hersey III needed permission to demolish it.
The planning commission said no and now, after an appeal, the city also says no - but it wasn't unanimous.
Those in favor are afraid to set a precedent of demolition by neglect, while those opposed say they feel hypocritical for wanting to tear down a historic house for which the city is responsible.
Hersey can level the house if it doesn't sell after six months.
