Five central Virginia churches are raising last-minute funds to help send a group to Haiti next week to help rebuild the earthquake-ravaged country.

Members from Slate Hill Baptist Church set up shop for donations at the Lake Monticello Food Lion Sunday afternoon.

The church is working with Grace and Glory Lutheran, Bybee Road Baptist, Beaver Dam Baptist and Effort Baptist to send 38 people to Haiti.

"We're going to build some homes and work on an orphanage that the Virginia Baptist built a year and a half ago, and there are still families that are without homes - still sleeping in tents and so we want to help them get out of those tents," said Slate Hill Baptist Pastor Rhon Williams.

The churches have been working to raise money for this trip for more than a year now.

They've collected about $4,000.

The first group of volunteers is leaving on Saturday.
