A Virginia mother has been arrested and is facing felony charges after her eight-month-old baby died alone in a hot car.

Alexandria police say 32-year-old Zoraida Magali Conde Hernandez drove to work Friday and forgot she had her son in the car.

It was not until she left work later that day that she saw her baby in the car.

Hernandez drove immediately to the hospital, and the infant was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police advise parents to be extra careful during these hot summer months.

"Slow down and be careful. Try not to let things get too busy. I don't know why and we don't know why at this point, what led to her mistake or failure," said Lieutenant Mark Bergin of the Alexandria Police Department.

Police charged the mother Saturday with felony child neglect.
