Congressman Robert Hurt visits Layz S Ranch, near Palmyra
Congressman Robert Hurt is cruising Route 15 through the 5th District with a focus on farming.
The Republican representative toured Layz S Ranch near Palmyra Tuesday afternoon. The farm raises livestock and produces fresh fruits and vegetables through its community-supported agriculture, or CSA, model.
Hurt is sponsoring a bill in Washington to reduce federal regulations he says stifle farm and forestry production.
"They have to operate under a tremendous number of rules and regulations and one of the things I've heard about as we travel across the district is the difficulty farmers sometimes have dealing with the Corps of Engineers and implementation of the Clean Water Act," Hurt said.
Hurt says the Preserving Rural Resources Act would encourage economic growth and add jobs on Virginia's farms.
The congressman also stopped in Dillwyn, Columbia, and at the Fluvanna Farmer's Market Tuesday.
