Friday in Augusta County Circuit Court, a judge handed down sentencing for the man who burned the Hildebrand Mennonite Church in Waynesboro in 2011. The judge went with the jury's recommendation of eight years for Paul Lenwill Cupp.
Last September, the 37-year-old man from Crimora was found guilty of arson. No injuries occurred and the Hildebrand Mennonite Church only suffered minor damages.
The defense asked if the judge would consider that in determining the sentencing. On the other side, the prosecution reminded the court of Cupp's history of playing with fire.
In the '90s, he placed a bomb in a post office, and in 2004, he attempted to bomb a gas station.
Cupp will not be under probation once he's finished his eight years.
