UVA’s Heritage Theater Starts Season with ‘Annie Get Your Gun'
Thursday night, the University of Virginia's Heritage Theater is kicking off a summer of entertainment.
The first show of the season will open the doors of the new and improved drama building and highlight the newly renovated Culbreth Theater.
Heritage Theater is shooting onto the summer scene with the Irving Berlin classic "Annie Get Your Gun." This musical about the bold sharpshooter Annie Oakley is leading a powerful lineup at the drama building.
"Annie Get Your Gun is one of the classic American musicals," said Bob Chapel, producing artistic director. "One of the greatest scores ever written by Mr. Irving Berlin and it's an American classic from the beginning to the end, it's a true family show, so people should really, I think, love it."
"Annie Get your Gun" is putting the spotlight on the new and improved drama building.
"Just take a look around. It's special because we have a brand new Ruth Caplin Theater, we have a brand new lobby, we have a renovated Culbreth Theater. We're back with five shows, three of which will be running at the same time at the end of the summer, and so we're back," Chapel said.
Heritage Theater fuses the worlds of Broadway and Charlottesville. Culpeper native Emelie Faith Thompson is a working actress in New York, but this week she's back in Charlottesville and locked and loaded as Annie Oakley.
"We range from veteran Broadway actors like Ken Waller, who's playing Chief Sitting Bull and who's been in Phantom of the Opera for years and years and years on Broadway, to people like me who are in New York and have been there for a couple of years working on stuff and to students," Thompson said.
With a jam-packed summer playbill, Heritage Theater is hoping to show the Charlottesville community that the saying from this classic musical is true: "there's no business like show business."
Coming up this summer, the theater will also put on the shows, "Red," "Tuna does Vegas," "The Marvelous Wonderettes," and "Next to Normal."
"Annie Get your Gun" starts Thursday and runs through July 6.
