The R.R. Smith Center in Staunton celebrates both art and history. Now they're extending that message to an alley.

The Staunton Historic Preservation Commission gave the green light to turn a downtown alley into an urban garden.

A donation of $50,000, plus volunteer time and materials, will create a community area complete with vertical landscaping, low-maintenance pavement and sculptures.

"There could be some openings of artwork, for example," said Bob Mortensen, a landscape architect for Mortensen Associates. "There could be some cocktail parties, something where a community gathering could come out and utilize. It could spill out. A place for the children's groups that are very active in the Smith Center."

Work is expected to begin in late July and last a couple of months.
