Augusta Health, Waynesboro YMCA Recruit for Cancer Study

Posted: Updated:

Augusta Health and the Waynesboro YMCA are teaming up for a national cancer study. Tuesday night, organizers kicked off the recruitment process, and they say they really need your help.

The goal of the study is to learn more about what factors either contribute to or prevent cancer. Scientists will track 300,000 participants over the course of 20 years. They'll need 425 from the area.

"I think if more people sign up for the study, that'll help long-term. I plan to sign up tonight, and make that commitment. And I've had family members who've passed away because of cancer, and we need to try to do all we can," said Delegate Steve Landes (R) 25th District.

They'll need men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have not had cancer. The study will involve collecting blood samples as well as other basic health information every so often.
