Staunton Group: Legalize Backyard Chickens in the City

Posted: Updated:

People turned out at Staunton Public Library Tuesday night to talk chickens.

Backyard chicken coops used to be commonplace in Staunton, but they're illegal.

Transition Staunton Augusta, a group determined to bring jobs and resources closer to home, wants to bring back the backyard coops. They talked openly about the idea with support from the people.

"They think that the eggs they get at home would be more nutritious, they'd be higher quality, they'd be fresher," said Staunton City Councilor Erik Curren. "They think that it would be nice for their family, especially their kids to see where food comes from, and that it's educational to have kids raise chickens. Some people even look at them as kind of a pet."

Some cities that say "yes" to backyard chickens are Charlottesville, Richmond and Waynesboro.
