Staunton police are tracking down a black bear that was spotted wandering around Monday afternoon on East Beverly Street. The last reported sighting was near Commerce Road.

The bear was first spotted at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind.  Staff members there alerted security when they saw the bear running through the grounds.

They called the Staunton Police Department, brought the students inside, and before they knew it, the bear started heading toward Mary Baldwin.

While the officer on site said the bear seemed pretty peaceful, it still caused a bit of a stir.

"I left the office here, went down to see if I could actually see it, and I did spot it. Well, I mean it was my first experience here on campus of a bear. We have seen some other critters," said Charlie Coker, VSDB security officer.

Remember - if you see a bear, stay away and call the police.
