Registration Begins Friday for Popular Albemarle Computer Camp
An instructor of the course says the class is so popular because kids are producing the software they use themselves.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. Friday for an Albemarle County summer camp that parents say is more popular than a rock concert.
The Coder Dojo Academy teaches kids computer coding, web page design and how to create robots and video games.
Within minutes last year, 1,000 students had signed up for Coder Dojo - but only 200 were able to get into the class.
One parent commented that it was harder to get a seat in the class than to get Rolling Stones tickets. This year the class is expanding to include 600 people, but organizers expect some students will still be left out.
Instructors say Coder Dojo is so popular because kids are creating the type of software they use on a daily basis.
"What we hear is that kids are often consumers of things and consumers of technology and we want to be able to help kids be not only consumers but producers," said Vince Scheivert, chief information officer for Albemarle County Public Schools. "So how do we help kids produce the things that they could use to better themselves? And who knows, maybe one day the world."
Scheivert said there's a huge need for more volunteers. If more people can help out, the Coder Dojo class can expand even further and accept even more students. Parents can volunteer even if they don't have a computer background.
The camp starts Monday, July 9. It takes place at Albemarle High School.
There is no charge for the program, but registration is required. Click here for registration information.
