A manhunt for a prison inmate who escaped from a work site in Augusta County is over.

Virginia State Police say Karan Batra, 44, was a member of a work release crew landscaping the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport's grounds and escaped around 10 a.m. Wednesday. But that night, Batra was caught in Washington, D.C.

State police had said earlier Wednesday that Batra had connections in Northern Virginia, around Alexandria, but police won't say how he was captured.

Batra was set to be released from the Cold Springs Work Center in Augusta of 2016. His criminal record dates back to the 1990s, mostly for theft-related crime.
