VA Medicaid Commission Meets for First Time

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state panel responsible for verifying that a series of daunting reforms to Medicaid have been met as a condition for expanding access to the federal-state health care program meets for the first time.

The Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission gathers Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Capitol Square.

It's comprised of 5 state senators, five House of Delegates members and two members of Gov. Bob McDonnell's cabinet. It's the result of a compromise during the final stages of the 2013 state budget talks that allows for the possibility of Medicaid expanding to an additional 400,000 low-income Virginians just above the federal poverty level.

Before the panel meets, conservatives opposed to expanding Medicaid plan to rally at the Bell Tower on the Capitol lawn.
