An Augusta County family is in mourning after a 19-year-old woman was killed by a train Saturday.

Jessica Collins Lowe died when she was struck by an oncoming train in Augusta County. The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. off South Oak Lane in Lyndhurst.

We spoke with Jessica’s mother, Debra Lowe, when she returned to the scene of the tragic accident Sunday. Through tears, Lowe braved the scene where her daughter was struck down by a freight train less than 24 hours earlier.

“She came to go fishing,” she stated. “I’ll never ever ever forget this spot.”

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says Jessica Lowe was fishing with a young man on a train trestle when a Norfolk Southern train came roaring towards them.

Rob Griffin lives nearby, and rushed to the scene when he heard screaming. This is what the young man who was on the trestle with Lowe told him: “He tried to take her off, get her to go off the short way, and she panicked and went this way and was unable to get off the bridge before the train caught up with her.”

Griffin called 911, but it was too late, Jessica died on the scene.

Her mother describes Jessica as loving and happy: “she would just light up a room,” and caring and responsible: “whenever anybody was in need for anything she was there.”

Jessica graduated from high school last month and was ready to start a new chapter. Now her family is preparing for a funeral.

“I’m mourning, and I don't know when I’ll ever stop…if I do ever stop.” Lowe stated.

Funeral plans have not been made yet.

Debra Lowe is urging all parents to keep their children away from train tracks.
