Runners took on the terrain at Pleasant Grove Park in Fluvanna County Saturday to remember a young man taken from the community too soon. As they crossed the finish line, those runners helped Timo's Memorial 5K reach a new milestone.

Timo's Memorial 5K celebrates the life of Timo Husted Wright. The 17-year-old died in a car crash in 2000.

"He spent his last day, last afternoon of his life right here, running cross country at Pleasant Grove and to have all these people of all ages come and share in that joy of movement and love of life never ceases to amaze me," said Angell Husted, Timo's mother and event organizer.

Each moment of the 9th annual race remembered this young man.

"Timo is so here," said Husted.

The instrument he played, the trumpet, signaled the start of the race. The rigorous course reminded runners of his love for cross country. A birthday cake during the awards ceremony celebrated what would have been his 30th birthday, and a special prayer circle remembered his last day.

"The first responders from Palmyra Fire and Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene, they realized there was nothing more they could do but they did do something. The group of men formed a circle around Timo's body, held hands and raised up prayers for Timo, his family and the community. I've never forgotten that," said Husted.

All proceeds from Timo's Memorial 5K support those first responders.

"This allows us to continue to run calls and stock our trucks and provide services for the citizens of Fluvanna County. It's a really neat way to be able to give back," said Ashley Roberts, Lake Monticello Rescue chief.

This year the 5K crossed a milestone - $40,000 raised over the past 9 years.

"I know all this makes Timo smile," said Husted.

Husted says she has some surprises up her sleeve for next year's race.
