Company Doing Blasting at CHO Has History of Problems

Posted: Updated:

Friday, we're learning the company that is doing the blasting at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport has a long record of problems - up and down the East Coast.

NBC29 has found a list of communities with the same complaints about the same company - all getting the same answer.

After a quick Google search - it looks like this isn't the first time home owners have complained Maine Drilling and Blasting damaged their homes. The damage is the same across the board - window cracks, nails popping and more.

From Virginia, to Massachusetts, to Maine - Maine Drilling and Blasting doesn't have the best record.

A CHO spokesperson says the airport did not research the company at all - they say it's the job of the prime contractor.

Home owners in the Walnut Hill neighborhood said they also found the same reports on damage online.

"Once we got the name Maine Blasting we started going on Google and basically doing a little research and what we found over time was that there was a pattern with these guys," said Steven Dejong, home owner.

The news articles - all from different towns - have one thing in common: the type of damage described.

"Cracks in foundations and sidewalks and those types of things, so very very similar to what we're experiencing here," said Jonathan Boersma, home owner in Walnut Hill.

Barton Hye - a homeowner in Marblehead Massachusetts says the company is not taking any responsibility.

"We fully did expect that someone would help us out afterwards and not to be thrown under the bus," said Hye.

Homeowners in Walnut Hill are waiting to see if the blasting company's insurance honors their claims.

A homeowner from Ashland Massachusetts had his claim honored according to the Metrowest Daily News. The article says he was paid $5,000 for cracks and a sinkhole in his driveway.

Maine Drilling and Blasting has yet to return NBC29's calls.
