Drivers who endanger the lives of children by passing stopped school buses can expect a ticket in Albemarle County.

After hearing from the public Thursday, Albemarle County School Board members voted five to two for putting cameras on buses to catch vehicles that pass illegally.

A study shows that, on average, one vehicle passes a stopped bus every day. Now the high-tech equipment will record the law breakers and the video will go straight to police.

Wendy shaver, a parent, says the cameras will allow bus drivers to focus on the kids.

"That's where their attention needs to be and not worrying about getting license plates. It's happening over and over and over again and people need to start paying for their mistakes," said Shaver.

One board member opposed to the technology says it encroaches on civil liberties.

The program is expected to generate money through fines.
