Valley Groups Work to Raise Awareness of Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is a crime that often goes unnoticed and unpunished. In hopes of bringing awareness to the issue and reversing the trend, this Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The Staunton Senior Center is handing out purple ribbons to raise awareness. Along with the greater Augusta County Coalition Against Elder Abuse, the center also sponsored a billboard highlighting one form of abuse.
Senior Center Director Lynn Harris says the biggest form of elder abuse is self-neglect, but there are many kinds.
"Physical abuse, emotional abuse, the financial exploitation. There's also sexual abuse that does occur. And the second highest number of calls that adult protective services get it's for neglect from a caregiver," said Harris.
If you'd like a ribbon to wear, you can get one at the Staunton Senior Center.
