VSP Investigate Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Albemarle County
Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Albemarle Saturday morning – and they're not saying much. Albemarle County police are saying even less.
What we know: An Albemarle officer was responding to a call at a home along Rockfish Gap Turnpike early Saturday morning. That's when something happened - police won't say what - and the officer shot a man to death.
The shooting took place in an area neighbors say is normally quiet.
"I didn't hear nothing, you know, it's so wooded up here it's buffered so…nothing," said William Johnson, a neighbor.
Calls for rescue crews went out around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Investigators remained on the scene until noon. Rockfish Gap Turnpike also reopened around noon. It was closed between Routes 6 and 151 as of 9:30 a.m. for the investigation.
Virginia State Police say an Albemarle County police officer shot and killed a man while responding to a domestic disturbance at a home.
Family members tell NBC29 the man killed was Greg Rosson. Rosson's relatives and friends are taking to the NBC29 Facebook page to grieve his loss.
One commenter says: "Greg was a great friend he would give you the shirt off his back."
Virginia State Police spokesperson Deborah Cox says the officer involved in the shooting was not injured. Police did not release details about the shooting or why the officer shot and killed Rosson.
Albemarle County Police Department spokesperson Carter Johnson declined to comment on the investigation but did confirm that the officer involved in the shooting is now on administrative leave and that Albemarle police have initiated an internal investigation.
