The Western Albemarle girls tennis team has won three straight Jefferson District Titles, they're the 2013 Region II Champions and now they're gearing up to face defending state champions E.C. Glass in the Virginia AA State Semifinals at Virginia Tech Friday.
Western beat E.C. Glass early in the season - but expect a different team to arrive in Blacksburg. "It was early in the season - its not the same," said Senior Fran Clifton. Claire Park added, "they were missing two of their players so it's a little nerve wracking. We're considered the underdogs but I definitely think we can do it."
The team is 21-1 on the season, with their only loss coming from Fauquier. The Warriors won't have to worry about Fauquier because they were eliminated in the regional tournament.
Coach Ellen Markowitz says the Warriors have what it takes to move forward. She said,"it's just a matter of digging down deep. Just the will to stay out there. The matches could be incredibly close. We've been there before so now we know what its about."
If the girls take down E.C. Glass Friday, they'll advance to the state finals, making it the furthest the Western girls tennis program has ever gone in the state tournament.
The girls say they are so excited for the opportunity to play. Park said, "Seeing the boys win it last year when we were so close. Their banner is out there as you turn into the school. It would just be amazing to have our banner out there too."
