Attorney General Candidate Fairfax Touts Unique Background
Before this election, youprobably hadn't heard of Justin Fairfax. He's the only person in the race forattorney general who has not held elected office, and he calls that anadvantage.
Fairfax says his professionalexperience and status as a Richmond outsider will help him in next week'sDemocratic primary.
"By the time the primaryelection hits on June 11, we will have done about 15,000 miles around thecommonwealth during this campaign," he said.
That's because thenorthern Virginia lawyer has never run for or held elected office. But that'ssomething he says sets him apart.
"As the non-politician inthe race, as someone who has not been enmeshed in these petty partisan fights,I come at it very differently," Fairfax said.
In Tuesday's Democraticprimary, Fairfax will go up against Mark Herring, a seven-year veteran in thestate Senate. The Republican running for attorney general, Mark Obenshain, isalso a longtime lawmaker in the Senate. Compared to both, Fairfax says he's adifferent kind of candidate.
"In fact," he said, "I'mthe only prosecutor in this race. And that gives me a background that's focusedon keeping our families safe and secure, and also making sure that our kids andour families have a much brighter future."
That's one of Fairfax'sbiggest talking points. Running to become the state's top lawyer, he says hisposition as the only former prosecutor in the race will be important.
"We've had that experienceusing the law to hold people accountable, to keep our families and ourbusinesses safe from harm," he said.
Recent polling data showsthis race is practically neck and neck. And with less than a week until youdecide, Fairfax says it's full steam ahead.
As a father of two, hesays his biggest priority is using the attorney general's office to go on theoffensive to help protect Virginia families and businesses.
The Democratic primary is TuesdayJune 11.
