The three-day Major League Baseball draft begins Thursday with the first two rounds. Virginia relief pitcher and closer, Kyle Crockett is expected to be the first Wahoo chosen, maybe as early as the third round on Friday.
He's shown all season, but especially last weekend, he's worthy of being a high pick. Crockett was voted the MVP of the Charlottesville Regional this past weekend.
Crockett was lights out as Virginia's closer. He picked up his 11th and 12th saves of the year pitching the 8th and 9th innings in games against Army and Elon.
Crokett didn't give up a walks and struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning in both games.
Crockett says, "I give all the credit to the coaches, they've put me in every situation possible in practice, so I feel like everytime I go out there I'm not getting anything new thrown at me."
UVa sophomore pitcher Nick Howard says, "Its truly unbelievable. You feel like the game is over when he comes into the game, he's just that dominant right now."
The lefty from Poquoson was in Virginia's starting rotation at the end of last year but UVa coaches felt this year's team needed Crockett to fill the important closer role.
Coach Brian O'Connor says, "He's really, really talented, but its one thing to be talented but its another thing to be a performer day in a day out."
Crockett has a career record of 12-3 and an ERA under two. At the ACC Tournament Florida State head coach Mike Martin said of Crockett "he won't be in the minors long".
UVa first baseman, Jared King says, "Man, that guy is unbelievable, his ability to go out and throw multiple pitches for strikes, he's consistently ahead of hitters, he's got put away stuff at the end of our bullpen, I couldn't be more happy for a guy to continue to be successful."
Crockett says, "We got a lot of good guys in the bullpen so I know I have good teammates to back me up. Our defense has been playing great the last few games, its just great going out there with confidence when I'm pitching."
Virginia plays host to Mississippi State in a 3-game Super Regional starting on Saturday at Davenport Field. All games in that series are sold out.
