Being kind paid off Tuesday in Charlottesville. The second annual Nancy Coates Walker Kid Hero Award went to a fourth-grader from Jackson-Via Elementary School named Destini Monroe.
The award was presented by its namesake and sponsored by the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA).
Monroe received the award because of her actions against bullying.
"It is important to me because I really follow the golden rule and treat others how you want to be treated and I make others feel good in the school," Monroe said.
SARA educates students in elementary school to intervene safely when others are being hurt.
Monroe was nominated by a school counselor.
